The RC&G rolling stock is numbered according to the following classification system:
21-49 Maintenance of Way cars & equipment
50 - 99 Passenger cars
100 - 199 Flat cars
200 - 249 Box cars, wood
250 - 299 Box cars, steel
300 - 319 Hopper cars, wood
320 - 329 Hopper cars, Steel, 2 bay
330- 399 Hopper cars, Steel, 3 bay
400 - 499 Gondolas
500 - 599 Tank cars
600 - 699 Reefers
700 - 799 Stock cars
800 - 899 Unassigned
950 - 975 Cabooses
While
it is unlikely that the cars in use in any class will make a dent in the
numbers available, having a large range allow the car numbers to be
randomly spaced to appear that there is a larger fleet even thought
there isn't.
